Turbulent match Cuba vs. US

Meetings between arch enemies Cuba and the US are always something special. So was the 2010 CONCACAF World Cup qualifier this weekend.

But it wasn’t the expected 6-1 victory for the US people will remember in the first place. It’s rather what happened before and afterwards.

Prior to the qualification match in Washington, the two Cuban players Pedro Faife and Reynier Alcantara took the opportunity to run away from their team and request political asylum in the United States.

After the 1-6 rout, the Cuban soccer association, Asociación de Fútbol de Cuba, degraded the national team’s German coach Reinhold Fanz. Gonzalez Triana will follow the 54-year-old, while Fanz is going to be an “adviser” to the team in the future. He had become Cuba’s national team coach in March 2008.

Cuba lost all four games in their qualification group A and has no more chances left to participate in the 2010 World Cup.
