New coach for Jamaican national football team

Former English international John Barnes follows Renê Simões (Brazil) as a new coach of Jamaica’s national football team.

The 55-year-old Brazilian was fired by the Jamaica Football Federation last week, after being just nine months in charge. "The Reggae Boyz" performed poorly by now in their first World Cup qualifiers this year.

The new coach, John "Digger" Barnes (44), is a native Jamaican and played 79 matches for the "Three Lions". He was the first colored player ever to be chosen for the English national team.

According to the association president, Horace Burrell, the 44-year-old will start working with the team on November 1. Jamaica, currently holding the last place in their World Cup-qualification group, will have to win their next matches against Mexico, Honduras and Canada in order to have a realistic chance to reach the next round. In their previous three games, the team only won one point.
